ABOUT
Gender Disparity In Sports Coverage
I'm Amy 👋 I am getting in touch about a burning passion of mine. There is a significant lack of women figures in media content.
Every morning, I flip to the sports section on the back of the newspaper and count the number of pages turned before a women's sports story appears. I scroll through social media daily and see major sporting platforms with more male representation than females. I challenge you to observe this.
This needs to change. Women need equal representation in media.
GOAL
Level The Playing Field
My goal is to hold sporting organisations responsible for the amount of women's content posted on social media accounts and hightlight those that have less than 50% of women figures of online posts.
This can be achieved by analysing the percentage of space perceived female figure(s) would occupy of a pixelated squared area in comparison to perceived male(s) figures across the organisations social media posts.
PURPOSE
The Championship Trophy
My analysis project aims to examine the representation of female athletes in the media. Women's sports have consistently received less coverage than men's and are often framed differently, focusing on appearance and personal relationships rather than athletic performance. Studies have also found gender disparities in how sports journalists cover women's sports, using more emotional and personal language. Women's sports are often relegated to lower-profile media outlets, further perpetuating the lack of visibility and attention given to female athletes. By analysing the percentage of space occupied by female and male figures in social media posts, I aim to bring attention to the issue of fair representation of sportswomen in the media and encourage more equitable coverage of women's sports.
